WE LOVE OUR PLANET

In 2012, the Group launched its green initiative themed “We Love Our Planet”, a significant pledge that brought Regal Hotels to a new level of sustainability development.

With this shared commitment and concerted effort, Regal Hotels Green teams continue to pro-actively demonstrate social responsibility through corporate initiatives and personal actions, balance the needs of our community and ensure a safe and healthy environment for our guests and employees, delivering world-class service and standards.

   


Engineering

  • Implement the 5-R principle within the Engineering Operation to sustain a green environment.
  • Instil the means and methodology to reduce energy consumption and conserve resources while continuing to provide a comfortable, quality guest experience. Instil good management and usage of hazardous materials to sustain a safe and green environment. Maintain good indoor air quality to protect the health of associates and guests.

 

Finance

  • Implement a waste management system together with a paperless programme to support environmental protection and inspire full utilization of resources in an eco-friendly manner.

 

Human Resources

  • Elevate associates and their families' awareness on environmental protection and promote a collaborative effort in fostering an eco-friendly working environment and promoting earth-friendly practices.

 

 

 

Marketing

  • Preserve the local characteristics of the cities where we operate – its environment, culture, heritage and aesthetics as well as the well-being of its inhabitants.
  • Lead green marketing campaigns which is supported by our company directors and hotels. Create, promote and be green influencers. Educate, engage and encourage our associates, our guests and our stakeholders to be responsible citizens and travellers.

 

Operations

  • Establish environmental protection guidelines and procedures for food and beverage and rooms operations in order to minimize heat, light, fuel oil, power and water consumption.
  • Dispose of liquid and solid waste and used chemicals in a responsible manner to eliminate/reduce their environmental impact.
  • Avoid promoting the consumption of endangered species.
  • Promote positive messages of "sustainability" to our guests through the implementation of best practices in environmentally-friendly services.

  • Instil environmentally-friendly energy conservation and waste management elements into the new "Green Hotel" design brief implemented by hotel owners with the guidance of our associates.

  • Purchase recycled and environmentally preferable products whenever practicable. Build up a green supplier list, which includes contractors and consultants that are mandated to use recycled and environmentally preferable products whenever practicable.

  • Introduce and promote "Green Sales Products and Programmes" through "Green Sales Channels" to sustain business growth and financial health. Engage our guests and employees through communications and education to advance understanding and goodwill.

Policies and Measures

  • Regal Hotels has formulated a group-wide Environmental Policy Statement to minimise the adverse environmental impacts within our operations and set forth our environmental missions, which include compliance, monitoring and reporting, employee awareness, enhancement initiatives and risk management.
 

Energy Efficiency and Energy Management

  • To make further commitment to achieve its sustainability goals, we incorporated several energy-efficient building systems and measures to our hotels to lower the energy consumption and waste production, including but not limited to implementing Intelligent Building Management System (iBMS) to all Regal Hotels by 2030 and partnering with electricity companies to conduct energy audits in the hotels to explore Energy Management Opportunities (EMOs).
 

Reduce Food Waste

  • Regal Hotels has partnered with Foodlink Foundation, Hong Kong's leading hunger relief charity, to help fight hunger and poverty by minimizing food wastage at some of our hotels in Hong Kong.

 

Promote Green Dining

  • Our restaurants and banquet services have adopted various green dining initiatives, including green wedding, meeting packages, and low carbon and ocean-friendly menus. Additionally, we offer shark fin-free menus for banquets to support marine biodiversity.
 

Support International Environmental Events

  • Our hotels take part in Earth Hour, a global event initiated by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to draw attention to climate change and the environment through energy conservation.

  • To follow the announcement of Hong Kong’s Climate Action Plan 2050, we have established progressive environmental targets aimed to effectively tracking and monitoring hotels’ environmental footprints, including but not limited to the following:

  • Our sustainability approach is all-inclusive, which means that we work to engage each of our associates in addition to guests and other stakeholders. Associates at all levels are encouraged to join our sustainability efforts in a number of ways and through a variety of activities.
 

Communication Forums

  • We organized a series of Communication Forums where we shared our sustainability goals in details with associates to give them a better understanding of their important roles in carrying out our mission. To show our commitment, we wore a 'We Love Our Planet' badge after attending a Communication Forum.
 

Staff Photo Contest

  • To further involve our associates in our 'We Love Our Planet' programme, we organized a staff photo contest titled 'Zoom • Green' and invited entries with an environmental and conservation focus.
 

Engaging our Guests

  • Regal Hotels encourages our guests to be responsible travellers and contribute to the protection of the environment.
 

Use of Recycled and Recyclable Materials for Hotel Items 

  • Many items in our guestrooms, such as pencils and notepads, are made of recycled materials.
  • Single-use plastic packaging of room amenities, single-use toiletries and disposable plastic tableware & takeaway containers are replaced by biodegradable material. 
 

Guest Room Conservation Programme

  • To encourage guests to help us conserve energy, bed linen and bath towels are changed every three day, as indicated on the information canvas in the bathroom. Guests can also find an energy conservation sticker on the main switch, reminding them to shut off lights when not in use.

 

‘Love This City’ Walking Map

  • Regal Hotels' properties are all located in convenient neighbourhoods close to attractions and points of interest. As such, we encourage our guests to explore nearby areas on foot by providing them with a ‘Love This City’ walking map, which contains information about points of interest and local delicacies in addition to a transit map.

Interactive Guest Experiences

  • Regal Hotels partners with WWF-Hong Kong to allow members of Regal Hotels’ loyalty programmes to redeem reward points as cash donations. We also regularly organize green-themed activities and promotions for guests.


 

We Love Our Planet Showcase

  • To further raise awareness of the green initiative, Regal Hotels staged a ‘We Love Our Planet’ exhibition at the lobbies of 5 hotels to showcase its green practices.

ISO CERTIFICATION

Reducing carbon emissions is one of our environmental protection goals. As the first carbon-neutral hotel in Hong Kong, iclub Wan Chai Hotel has achieved the highest CarbonCare Label - Champion from 2011 to 2015 for its 100% reduction of carbon. The five Regal Hotels and iclub Fortress Hill Hotel in Hong Kong have received a Carbon"Less" Certificate from the Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence in 2013 and 2018 respectively, recognising our achievements in carbon footprint reduction.

'We Love Our Planet' Launch Ceremony

'We Love Our Planet', the Group's green sustainability program, was launched at the La Terrasse of Regal Kowloon Hotel. Chief Operating Officer Ms. Belinda Yeung shared with associates the vision and mission of RHI's green initiatives; while Function Heads and Hotel General Managers introduced the function- and hotel-specific green objectives. All associates joined hands to pledge to go green.

Earth Hour

All Regal Hotels in Hong Kong and China Mainland participated in WWF Earth Hour in 2013. Exterior lightings and non-essential lights were turned out or dimmed for one hour.

Green Summer Carnival

Regal Hotels organised a ‘Green Summer Carnival’ for associates and their family and friends, featuring a low carbon cooking class and a tour to Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks. Pictured here is the group of 'junior chefs' attending the class.

Garbage Enzyme Workshop

Regal Riverside Hotel conducted a garbage enzyme workshop for associates. Associates learned how to make use of garbage to produce an organic detergent, an environmental-friendly way to reduce kitchen waste and use of chemicals in daily hotel operations.

Hong Kong Coastal Cleanup Challenge

Regal Hotels participated in the Hong Kong Coastal Cleanup Challenge organized by National Geographic Channel in 2012. Around 100 colleagues and their family members worked together for two Sundays. A total of 134kg of garbages were collected.

925 Club Farm Tour

Regal Hotels organised a farm tour for loyalty program 925 Club members to learn more about organic farming. Members also helped harvest seasonal vegetables during the visit.
